Happy New Year

Wish all of you a very Happy & Prosperous New Year. While the star sector of 2007 was the Power & Energy sector. The sectors which I think will perform well in 2008 will be IT, Telecom, Pharma, Agri and select Metals & Mining along with select Energy stocks. The markets are likely to go higher before they go down. We might see a tearing bull rally in January. Corrections may come either around the end of January or around the end of April. But an end of the year target of 25000 on the Sensex is what I expect from this year. While the indices may give moderate returns, there will be plenty of action in the mid and small caps in the coming year.

    In Pharma sector, I would pick Unichem Labs and Aurobindo Pharma. In Metals & Mining, it would be Jayaswal Neco, Tata Steel. In Energy, PTC (on dips), NTPC, Tata Power (on dips). In telecom, Tata Teleservices and HFCL may be dark horses.

    For all those who had asked me about GMR Infra, I finally found out why the stock is being touted by many brokerages and analysts despite looking overpriced in light of its meagre earnings figures. The buzz in the market is that they might be coming out with an IPO of GMR Energy.

    Some dark horses in 2008 could be Videocon Industries, HFCL, Su-raj Diamonds besides the stocks I have already posted as my picks on this site.

    While the year 2008 may be overall positive, there might be two big dips happening during the year which you should be careful about.

    I want your opinion on HUL which I hold for the past 3 months (400 @ Rs.221). FMCG and HUL in particular has been the worst performing sector/stock in the last 2 quarters. I am still holding HUL hoping that I would break even soon and see some profits on a long run in 2008. I want your inputs on HUL and the kind of targets one could expect on this for 2008 April and beyond.

    Siemens has recently declared a Dividend as well as a 1:1 bonus. The company has been doing quite well. If you are a long term investor, you can hold it.

    Action might return in Hindustan Unilever and one can look at targets of 246-250 technically.

    Hi Gaurav,

    I was the one who discovered Prakash Industries when it was trading at Rs.20. It is now trading at 340 and some analysts and brokerage houses are pushing the stock with a Buy rating now. I would recommend a hold only and not a fresh buy at current level.

    My view on Aegis Logistics is similar. Would recommend a Hold but for fresh buying there are better stocks available in the market.

    Hi Nadim,

    Agrodutch was recommended by me just a couple of months back at 25-26 levels. Today's high was 48.10. I think it may go to 60 levels where it can find some resistence.

    I would not be comfortable buying Kirloskar Ferrous at current levels. Avoid.

    I would stay miles away from Yashraj Securities at cmp.

    Hi Raja,

    Walchand is at a crucial stage, technically. It can either breakout upwards or it may fall also from here. You can buy with a stop loss of 8000.

    STC is a stock which moves in circuits....either up or down. A very risky stock. Something like double or quits.

    Assam Co I don't track at all and at the time of giving this reply, its charts were not opening. I wouldn't buy it at fundamentals.

    You can keep holding TCS and convert your LML into Cybermate Infotek.

    We are entering a phase in this rally in mid-small caps where irrationality is creeping in. So we must be very cautious now. I would not buy HCC at current price. The risk-reward ratio is not in favor of reward here.

    Hi Ramesh,

    As I said in my post that I expect the IT sector to do well in 2008, the prediction has already started coming true. You are already witnessing a rally in many of the forgotten IT stocks. IEC Software has turned around in the last two quarters, but the price run up has already been very steep. If I was in your place, at the first sign of weakness in IEC, I would switch from it to Cybermate Infotek.

    I have already said in my blog that I expect select Power stocks to do well in 2008 but not the entire sector as a whole. While the Euphoria in this sector can last till the Rel Power IPO, the valuations are stretched. I would have booked profit in Rel Energy at or even slightly less than 2700 if I was in your place.

    I had already advised on the Gufic Bio board to book profit and buy Cybermate Infotek instead. I would book profit in Bellary as well.

    Hi SMJain,
    You could add more of Cybermate Info on corrections to bring down your cost price. It always helps to buy a stock while it is still quoting at a low PE because it increases your margin of safety and also your chances of earning a profit.
    Kolte Patil is a new listing and not much data is available on its financial history. Still, I would say that at current price it is a hold.
    MRPL has run up quite a lot in the recent past and one must be cautious on it now. I would keep a Profit Lock on it at 125. You can book profit if it goes below that, to be on the safe side.

    Since I have MRPL at 140 and Kolte at 232 I think I should book losses in MRPL. What do u say.
    There is another stock I am looking into is Interworld Digital.
    Its trading at Rs 4 right now..

    In case of Cybernate
    I am still not sure of the low PE funda since we also need to see the management and the growth prospects of the company. When I visited the cybermate site they didnt have a client list .
    Low PE can be an indicator but what I feel we would be better off measuring it against the growth(may be the PEG can give a better idea.). I just want to know from you that apart from low PE what makes it a company with good fundamentals.
    As per your advice I will still go ahead and purchase more of Cybermate though as I have a lot of faith in your tips

    I had yesterday advised you to hold both Kolte Patil and MRPL (with SL of 125) and both have gone up today. You may recover your cost price in MRPL soon.

    I had a look at Interworld and though I was not too impressed with its fundamentals, chartically it can become a buy if it trades above 5.05 for a few days with good volumes.

    Ofcourse, the quality of management and future growth prospects are very important factors while making an investment. I never said that Low PE is the only factor. PEG is anyday a better criteria than just PE. In the case of Cybermate Info, the company showed a 152% jump in Net Profit in June quarter and 203% jump in Net Profit in Sept quarter. It is very important that they maintain this trend of high growth for its stock price to make new highs.
    Yes, Rohit Ferro is a good stock to buy as the company is on a high growth trajectory presently.
